Making Oobleck was the first lab that we did this year. The ingredients that were needed to make obeleck are water and cornstarch. To make oobleck you need a 1:3 ratio of water to cornstratch. First when we mixed the ingredients together the substance looked like a liquid, but when you would grab it and compress it together it would turn into a solid then back to a liquid.
What would lead you to consider oobleck to be a liquid? Solid?
Oboleck is classified as a non-newtonian fluid. When I was first experimenting with oobleck during this lab, I thought that the substance was a liquid, but once I grabbed it it turned into a solid. I thought that obeleck can't specifically go under any category, because it was both a liquid and a solid. I believed it was solid when I would add force to it or when I would compress it. I would believe it was a liquid when I wasn't doing anything to the oobleck.
What was the purpose of this lab exercise? What happened? What did you learn? Is it a solid or liquid?
The purpose of this lab was to understand the difference between solids and liquids, and also to know more about the states of matter. During the lab the oobleck was a watery substance when you wouldn't touch it (liquid) then when you would grab it or compress it, the substance would be a solid. I researched about oobleck and I learned that oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, meaning that the ooblecks viscosity changes depending on the amount of stress or force applied. Oobleck is both a solid and a liquid, it depends how much force you apply.
